Network

Basic Information

This program can provide simultaneous work of several persons with one database, based on the client-server technology. It means, that the main user (further referred to as Server) should open the local database as a file using standard File->Open... operation and to make it accessible for other users connection (further referred to as Clients): File->Allow Network Connections.... To work with the remote database clients should select the File->Open Networked Database... menu item.

To differentiate access rights between different persons, use the Access Levels setting in Folder Properties.

Network Restrictions

 While working with the program in the network mode, the client and the server can perform the following operations:

  • To create, clone, move, edit, sort and print records;
  • To execute and edit queries;
  • To open attachments;
  • To create, edit and move folders;

The following software opportunities are blocked in the network mode:

  • Forms, reports and toolbars editing;
  • Attaching new files to the records;
  • Records and folders physical removing;
  • Data export/import to other database formats.

Server Mode

 In order to work with the database in the server mode you should:

  1. Open the existing database using File->Open... menu item
  2. Select the File-> Allow Network Connections menu item
  3. In the window that appears enter the network database name for the clients to use, the password to be asked from the clients in order to be connected to this DB and the server user name.
  4. Press the Finish button. If the server creation is successful, the dialog window is closed and the beginning of the program main window caption will be the following: DATABASE_NAME - Server (CLIENT_N):SERVER_ADDRESS, where DATABASE_NAME - the name of the opened DB, CLIENT_N - the number of clients connected to the DB, SERVER_ADDRESS - server address. SERVER_ADDRESS is used by clients to connect to the server and corresponds to the IP-address of the computer with opened DB working in the server mode.
  5. To make the DB inaccessible to the network connection select the File->Disallow Network Connections menu item.

Client Mode

In order to connect to the database opened in the server mode you should:

  • Select the File->Open Networked Database... menu item
  • In the window that appears enter the address of the remote DB (SERVER_ADDRESS), the password of the remote DB and your login. The login will be used by the server for your identification.
  • Press the Finish button. If the connection to the database is successful, the program main window will look as usual.
  • To disconnect from the DB select the File->Close menu item.

Records editing in the Client/Server mode

 In the right top corner of the record editing window there is an indicator displaying the status of the selected record:

  • READ ONLY - the current record is being edited by another user at the moment and for other users it is read-only
  • EDIT - the current record is being edited by you and for other users it is read-only
  • Read/Write - the current record isn't being edited by any user, and it is accessible both for reading and writing.

Note 1: The record editing is started when you begin modifying any of its fields.

Note 2: Records being edited are not accessible for moving.

Network users

When you work with the database over a network, you can use the system variable [$User Name] in database scripts. This variable stores the name of the user who performed the action with the database.

For example, if we want to log the changes of database records, we can apply the Apply Text Formula to a field action for the on change event of a text field. The parameters will be the following:

In this case, when the text box is modified, the following information will be entered in the log field:

2006-06-23 12:01:45 John
2006-06-23 15:45:10 Tom
2006-07-02 13:02:34 Mary

In this example John, Tom and Mary are names of users who modified this record.

For details, see the scripts and text formulas sections.

Network Status

 To show the window with the current network status, use the File->Show Network Status... menu item. The window that appears is not modal, i.e. doesn't interfere with the further program work.

The Network Log tab contains the list of the last messages received by the program from other network users and will help you to determine the reason of failure in case of its occurrence.

The Clients List tab (only for the Server) contains the list of the connected clients and the necessary information about them: Name, Connection Time, Time of the latest message from the client, Number of messages from the client, Client's ID.
